Controlling Audio Device Volume in SoundCheck

October 23, 2024/in Blog, SoundCheck Tips Videos/by Julius Wijono
Easily control the input and output levels of your audio devices using SoundCheck’s Custom Mixer Volume step. In this video, we’ll show how controlling audio device volume for devices like USB headsets ensures accurate calibration and testing.

Detailed explanations of how to use SoundCheck can be found in the SoundCheck manual.

Video Transcript: Controlling Audio Device Volume in SoundCheck

In SoundCheck, controlling the input and output levels of audio devices is crucial for consistent calibration and effective testing. The Custom Mixer Volume step allows you to achieve this with any device running on WDM, WASAPI, or Core Audio. For example, you can control the volume of a headset while testing it, or set the levels of a device to unity gain.

Here, I have a USB headset connected, and I want to control its output level in my sequence. In this sequence, I’ll play pink noise through the USB headset and set a specific volume level at the start of the sequence. You can find this step in the Sequence Editor under Custom Mixer Volume. Click and drag it into the sequence steps and double-click to open the Mixer Volume window.

You must set the type as either a playback device or a recording device for volume control. Select the device you wish to adjust; I will be using the USB headset. Then, you can set the volume control. I will set this to 50% and ensure it is unmuted.

When I run the sequence, you will see that the USB headset in my settings changes to the percentage that I just set.

There are a couple of things to be aware of when using this mixer volume step:

  • Separate steps are required for playback and recording. This means if you need to control both input and output levels, you’ll need two Custom Mixer Volume steps in your sequence.
  • Separate steps are required for each device being controlled.
  • This custom step cannot be renamed in a sequence. If you need it labeled, right-click on the step and add a comment to display the name of the device.
